Now weapon attacks are simply never better than cantrips.įrankly, I don't understand martial weapon proficiency on clerics. The disparity is even greater now with Blessed Strikes from Tasha's Cauldron since you can choose to boost either your weapon attacks or cantrips with any domain. Sure you get divine strike, but firstly you get it at level 8 which is a bit late secondly it still only puts the weapon on par with, and not significantly superior to cantrips and thirdly weapon attacks get outclassed by cantrips again at level 11. You'd have to have a +4 mod to strength in order for it to match sacred flame, let alone toll the dead. Problem with the war cleric is that the heavy crossbow gets outclassed by cantrips as early as level 5. Great flavor for rogue snipers or military characters. Honestly, whenever I've player crossbow shooters, I've just resigned myself to the weapon not being great and just embracing the flavor of playing a more mechanical, clunkier weapon. Or just play around with better ranges or slightly higher damage (1d12 or 2d6). If you wanted to buff crossbows, you could make the Crossbow Expert bonus action attack apply to any crossbow, not just hand crossbows. It's just not really worth the extra feats. If you did all that with Longbow, you'd be dealing 4d8 damage (avg 18) vs. But honestly, even that isn't a lot of extra damage. Add in the Piercer feat and Orcish Fury plus any other damage-die reroll feats I missed to roll those bigger d10s even more when you get those automatic critcs. That leads me towards Assassin for potential auto-crits in round 1. Otherwise, everything else is just worse: worse range, heavier, more expensive, worse properties.Īssuming you can overcome the loading property (Artificer infusion, Crossbow Expert), you'd want to focus on a build that maximizes the d10 damage die. The only real advantage I know for heavy crossbows over longbows is the damage die (d10 vs. Megathread D&D 5e 1D&D D&D 4e D&D v3.5 D&D 3e Pathfinder 1 Pathfinder 2 WOD PBTA Fate GURPS Universal Other r/DnD /r/rpg /r/Pathfinder_RPG /r/tabletop /r/UnearthedArcana /r/DnDHomebrew /r/dndnext Related Non-TTRPG Subreddits r/characterdrawing /r/Imaginar圜haracters /r/alternativeart On-Topic Subreddits
